Marvel Studios made the surprise announcement at this years San Diego Comic Con, delighting horror fans
The President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, after making a rafter of announcements about upcoming films and television series, was suddenly joined True Detective star, Mahershala Ali, who theatrically put on an official Blade baseball cap, as Feige made the formal announcement
No date or details have been announced for the new Blade film, although speculation is that the first new film will probably arrive in 2022.
Created by writer Marv Wolfman, Blade made his first appearance in the 1973 comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10 as a supporting character. He is known to be a vampire hunter — half-mortal, half-immortal — who tries to rid the world of vampires as a way of avenging his mother, who was killed by a vampire as she gave birth to him.
Mahershala will pick up the mantle of one of the most iconic vampire characters in contemporary culture, and if past is prologue, he is more than up to the task.
In addition to his well known roles in HBO’s True Detective and as Cotton Mouth Stokes in Luke Cage, Ali is also an Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor in Moonlight and Green Book. He’s probably one of the hottest actors in entertainment today.
The original Blade starring a very groundbreaking Wesley Snipes was released in 1998 .
It was also the very first successful Marvel Comics Adaptation.
It came out two years before the very first X-Men film was released.
The franchise came to an end however, possibly due to the infamous tax issues that dogged actor Snipes.
Special effects and filmation have come a LOOONG way in the past 20 years, so there’s no telling how the iconic vampire story will be re invented this go around.
Needless to say we are looking forward to the reboot with great anticipation.
