End of an era.
Bleeding Cool published the sad news that issue #193 of The Walking Dead will be the last.
It was met with a great amount of anguish and gnashing of teeth. And more than a little shock. Its not like anyone assumed that the iconic comic would simply go on forever, but the news was shockingly abrupt. It was announced on July 2 and the final issue came out on July 3rd.
The suddenness was even more shocking in light of the fact that future issues had already been announced and release dates selected for both August and September. Which: weird.
Weirder, there was no actual formal announcement of the end of the line—although, Bleeding Cool did confirm the rumor with Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson.
The confirmation, (but non announcement) was then confirmed by writer and creator Robert Kirkman on his Twitter account on July 1st (see tweet below),
Kirkman then issued the following:
“I’m upset, too. I’m going to miss it as much as you will, if not more so. It breaks my heart that I had to end it. And we have to move on….but I just love this world too much to stretch things out until it doesn’t live up to what I want it to be. I hope you understand.”
No word on what the incredibly successful AMC series of the same name is going to do. While the shows are obviously closely based on the comic story-lines, they have diverged significantly: bringing in completely new characters and killing others that are not included in the comic.. No one knows what the show producers or AMC will do with the television franchise going forward.
Truly the end of the era.
Pro tip: Go immediately to your neighborhood comic shop and purchase Issue #193 of The Walking Dead because it appears to be the final one.
